$20,000

The Cult, a large piece of original airbrushed artwork, featuring a caduceus or Wand of Hermes. The imagery used in this painting is highly characteristic of the artist’s work, which incorporated winged symbols for a variety of bands. It was commissioned by the Cult’s L.A. management for a U.S. tour. The Cult, leading exponents of post-punk goth-rock, established a dedicated following in their native Britain in the mid-80s with tracks such as ‘She Sells Sanctuary’. With a new, harder rock sound, they broke into the U.S. market in the late 80s with the single ‘Love Removal Machine’ and their 1989 album, ‘Sonic Temple’, was a worldwide, multi-platinum hit. The caduceus was an ancient astrological symbol of commerce and is often depicted being carried by the Greek god Hermes (Thoth in ancient Egypt), the messenger and herald of the gods, conductor of the dead and protector of merchants and thieves.
